چکیده

Low-frequency hearing is critically important for speech and music perception, but no mechanical measurements have previously been available from inner ears with intact low-frequency parts. These regions of the cochlea may function in ways different from the extensively studied high-frequency regions, where the sensory outer hair cells produce force that greatly increases the sound-evoked vibrations of the basilar membrane. We used laser interferometry in vitro and optical coherence tomography in vivo to study the low-frequency part of the guinea pig cochlea, and found that sound stimulation caused motion of a minimal portion of the basilar membrane. Outside the region of peak movement, an exponential decline in motion amplitude occurred across the basilar membrane. The moving region had different dependence on stimulus frequency than the vibrations measured near the mechanosensitive stereocilia. This behavior differs substantially from the behavior found in the extensively studied high-frequency regions of the cochlea.

Basilar membrane nonlinearity determines auditory nerve rate-intensity functions and cochlear dynamic range.

In a previous paper (Winter et al., 1990) we demonstrated the existence of a new type of auditory-nerve rate-intensity function, the straight type, as well as a correlation between rate-level type, threshold and spontaneous rate. In this paper we now show that the variation in rate-intensity functions has its origin in the basilar membrane nonlinearity. Comparison of rate-intensity functions at...

Reticular lamina and basilar membrane vibrations in living mouse cochleae.

It is commonly believed that the exceptional sensitivity of mammalian hearing depends on outer hair cells which generate forces for amplifying sound-induced basilar membrane vibrations, yet how cellular forces amplify vibrations is poorly understood. In this study, by measuring subnanometer vibrations directly from the reticular lamina at the apical ends of outer hair cells and from the basilar...

Furosemide alters organ of corti mechanics: evidence for feedback of outer hair cells upon the basilar membrane.

A widely held hypothesis of mammalian cochlear function is that the mechanical responses to sound of the basilar membrane depend on transduction by the outer hair cells. We have tested this hypothesis by studying the effect upon basilar membrane vibrations (measured by means of either the Mössbauer technique or Doppler-shift laser velocimetry) of systemic injection of furosemide, a loop diureti...

New efficient stimuli for evoking frequency-specific auditory steady-state responses.

ASSR is a promising tool for the objective frequency-specific assessment of hearing thresholds in children. The stimulus generally used for ASSR recording (single amplitude-modulated carrier) only activates a small area on the basilar membrane. Therefore, the response amplitude is low. A stimulus with a broader frequency spectrum can be composed by adding several cosines whose frequency interva...

Effect of modulation of basilar membrane position on the cochlear microphonic.

Certain characteristics of the extracellular cochlear microphonic (CM) recorded by intracochlear electrodes change in a bimodal manner as a function of prior acoustic exposure, intensity of stimulation, or stimulus frequency. In the present study, it is shown that biasing the basilar membrane position toward scala tympani serves to enhance the CM amplitude when the cochlea is unfatigued, when l...
